The dinosaurs are invading Ventnor!

Dinosaur trail in Ventnor
The Isle of Wight is being invaded by dinosaurs this summer (the virtual variety). A dinosaur trail along the south and south west coast of the Island takes in the key dino-hotspots including Ventnor, where a dinosaur was found near the La Falaise carpark behind The Spyglass.

Six interactive ‘meteorites’ are sited along the trail – a metre high, containing relics and stories about our prehistoric friends. The meteorites are located at Yaverland car park; Bonchurch landslip next to to the public car park; La Falaise car park, Ventnor; Blackgang car park; Hanover Point and on National Trust land on the Downs above the Needles.

Visitors are able to use their smart phones and tablets to download a Dinosaur Island App and ‘walk’ alongside the dinosaurs that roamed the Isle of Wight 130 million years ago. You’ll meet a different dino at each spot – watch out, he’s behind you!

island-coasterAn Island Coaster bus service will operate along the trail during the summer holiday period (also adapted to carry bikes in a specially converted compartment on the lower deck). Please click here to download the bus timetable for the summer.

The dino frenzy ties in with the forthcoming Walking With Dinosaurs movie, destined to be the Christmas 2014 blockbuster.

While you’re out and about, exploring the Island, why don’t you walk with the dinosaurs at Compton beach – look at these giant dinosaur footprints formed millions of years ago!

The IOW was named the ‘Dinosaur Capital of Great Britain’ by the Natural History Museum. Who says we’re a bunch of old fossils, eh?
